Trout in cloudy water
From the camera
Feeding per 10 fish-minutes by clarity so far: clear 1.2, a little cloudy 1.
Watch liveFeeding timesTrout hunt mostly by sight. When rain or snowmelt washes silt into a stream, they can't see drifting food from as far away, and the water they can work shrinks.
In murky water, trout tend to move toward slower water near the edges and bottom. They lean more on their lateral line, which senses vibrations in the water, and on smell. A rain can also wash worms and land insects into the stream, so feeding often picks up as the water starts to clear.
On the water
As muddy water clears, fish the edges and slower water with larger, darker or more visible flies. Check current clarity on the feeding page before you go.
