    "Ignore colour and brightness: light and murk change them. Compare the constellation of black spots.",
    "The gill cover (operculum, the flat plate behind the eye) is rigid, so its spots keep their layout. Start there.",
    "Next best: the spots between the dorsal fin and the lateral line, and on the tail.",
    "A trout's left and right sides have different patterns. If the two photos show opposite sides (heads pointing different ways), the spots won't match even for the same fish, so look for other clues and decide carefully."
